Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most studied forms of medicine in the world. At IWCAZ, we practice it with clinical precision — treating the root of your pain, stress, or imbalance, not just the surface.
Acupuncture is a complete medical system developed over 3,000 years that uses the precise insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and restore balance.
Modern research has shown that acupuncture triggers measurable physiological responses — including the release of endorphins and serotonin, reduced cortisol levels, improved blood flow, and modulation of the nervous system. It works. And it works on a lot of different things.
At IWCAZ, acupuncture is practiced as part of an integrative approach — meaning your acupuncturist communicates with your naturopathic physician, and your treatments are coordinated with your overall care plan. You don't have to choose between Eastern and Western medicine. We do both.
Thin, sterile needles are placed at precise anatomical points mapped over centuries of clinical practice and validated by modern research.
Needles activate sensory neurons, prompting the brain and spinal cord to release neurotransmitters including endorphins, serotonin, and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Acupuncture improves microcirculation and, in traditional terms, restores the smooth flow of vital energy (Qi) through the body's meridian pathways.
Studies show measurable reductions in inflammatory markers and pain signaling — making acupuncture clinically effective for both acute and chronic conditions.
Acupuncture is recognized by the WHO and backed by clinical research for the following conditions — and many more.
Back pain, neck pain, joint pain, sciatica, and post-injury recovery. One of the most well-researched and effective applications of acupuncture.
Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's "rest and digest" mode — reducing cortisol and producing a measurable calming effect.
Reduces frequency, severity, and duration of both tension headaches and migraines — with effects that often outlast the treatment series.
Menstrual irregularities, PMS, perimenopause, and support for fertility. Acupuncture is commonly used alongside reproductive medicine.
Regulates the sleep-wake cycle by calming the nervous system and supporting the natural production of melatonin and serotonin.
Addresses fatigue at its root — improving qi flow, supporting adrenal function, and restoring energy that rest alone isn't recovering.
IBS, nausea, bloating, and gastric discomfort respond well to acupuncture, which helps regulate gut motility and reduce inflammation along the digestive tract.
Reduces recovery time, relieves muscle tension, and promotes tissue healing. Popular with athletes and active patients managing overuse injuries.
A lot of people are nervous before their first acupuncture session — usually because they're picturing something painful. It isn't. Most patients describe the sensation as minimal, and many fall asleep on the table.
Your first session is longer than follow-ups because we start with a thorough intake. We want to understand what's driving your symptoms before placing a single needle — that's what makes treatment effective rather than generic.
Sessions typically run 60 minutes. Follow-up visits are usually 45–60 minutes. Many patients notice improvement within 3–6 sessions, though some feel a difference after the first.
Your acupuncturist reviews your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. We look at tongue, pulse, and palpation to inform point selection.
Sterile, single-use needles — thinner than a human hair — are placed at specific points. Most patients feel little to no discomfort. Some feel a mild heaviness or warmth.
You rest quietly with the needles in place for 20–30 minutes. The room is calm, the lights are low. Most patients find this deeply relaxing — many sleep.
Needles are removed — painlessly — and your acupuncturist discusses what was observed, what to expect in the following days, and next steps.
Most conditions respond best to a series of sessions. Your acupuncturist recommends a frequency and follows your progress, adjusting the approach as you respond.

We hear the same hesitations a lot. Here's the truth.
Acupuncture needles are nothing like injection needles — they're solid, hair-thin, and flexible. Most patients feel minimal sensation. Many fall asleep during treatment.
The WHO recognizes acupuncture for over 100 conditions. Meta-analyses of thousands of patients consistently show it outperforms sham treatment for pain, headache, and more.
Acupuncture produces measurable biological effects — changes in brain activity on fMRI, reduced inflammatory markers in blood, documented nervous system responses. The effect is real.
Acupuncture is increasingly used in hospitals, cancer centers, and VA facilities as a complement to conventional treatment — not a replacement for it.
Acupuncture works on infants, animals, and skeptics. The physiological response doesn't depend on belief — it's a biological mechanism, not a mindset.
Chronic conditions typically respond best to a course of treatment. Many patients notice improvement after the first session; more significant and lasting change comes with a series.
One of the real advantages of coming to IWCAZ for acupuncture is that we're not a standalone acupuncture studio. We're a full naturopathic clinic — which means your acupuncturist and your ND can talk to each other, coordinate your care, and build a treatment plan that addresses your health from every angle.
If you're dealing with hormone issues and chronic pain, you may benefit from both hormone therapy and acupuncture working in parallel. If fatigue is your main concern, IV therapy and acupuncture together may move the needle faster than either alone.
You don't have to choose a lane. We'll help you figure out what combination makes the most sense for your specific situation.
Acupuncture Pairs Well With
Not the way most people expect. Acupuncture needles are far thinner than injection needles — about the width of a human hair — and are inserted gently. Most patients feel little to nothing. Some feel a brief, mild sensation at insertion (often described as a dull heaviness or warmth), which is actually a good sign that the point has been activated. Many patients fall asleep during treatment.
It depends on your condition and how long you've had it. Acute issues (recent injury, short-term stress) may respond in 3–6 sessions. Chronic conditions typically need a longer course — often 8–12 sessions before significant lasting change. Your acupuncturist will give you a more specific recommendation after your intake and first treatment.
Yes. Acupuncture has one of the best safety profiles of any medical intervention when practiced by a trained, licensed acupuncturist. We use sterile, single-use needles only — never reused. Side effects are rare and minor (occasional light bruising at needle sites). We review your health history before treatment to ensure there are no contraindications.
We are a cash-pay clinic and do not bill insurance directly. Some insurance plans do cover acupuncture — we can provide a receipt (superbill) that you may be able to submit to your insurer for potential reimbursement. Many patients also use HSA or FSA funds for acupuncture visits.
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before (don't come on an empty stomach), wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing, and avoid alcohol the day of treatment. Come prepared to discuss your health history, current symptoms, and goals. That's it — we'll take care of the rest.
Absolutely. Acupuncture is designed to complement, not replace, your existing medical care. Many patients use acupuncture alongside conventional treatment — including post-surgical recovery, cancer support, and chronic disease management. Let us know what other care you're receiving and we'll coordinate accordingly.
